“in the Mark Twain National Forest!”
Travel on this scenic byway combine paved highway and a nice 8 mile section of maintained gravel road for a total of 28 miles. Most of the route is along wooded hills and valleys which are covered with mixed hardwoods, with intermingled eastern red cedar and pine stands. Vistas provide opportunity to view distant landscapes. Two areas provide for visitors to rest and picnic. They are Onyx and Sugar Camp Tower. Roaring River State Park and Table Rock Lake provide opportunities and are close to the byway route. Directions: From Highway 112 just south of Roaring River State Park travel south approximately 2 miles, turn left onto Forest Road 197 and continue until you come to Highway 86, from that point you will turn left and stay on Highway 86 until you leave the Forest Boundary just south of Bates Corner where Highways 86 and 76 meet.
