“the prettiest campground in Death Valley”
Mesquite Spring is the northernmost and often the prettiest campground in Death Valley, providing you time it right. If you are a lover of desert beauty, then you must make this trip in late winter or early spring, when all kinds of tiny wildflowers can bring the stark valley floor to life. The key is soil moisture, courtesy of rains in November and December. The elevation is 1,800 feet. Mesquite Spring campground is within short range of two side trips. It is five miles (past the Grapevine Entrance Station) to Ubehebe Crater, a scenic point, and four miles to Scotty’s Castle, a historic building, where tours are available. There are 30 sites for tents or RVs up to 30 feet (no hookups). Picnic tables and fire grills are provided. Drinking water, flush toilets, and a dump station are available. Some facilities are wheelchair-accessible. Leashed pets are permitted. From Furnace Creek Visitor Center, drive north on Highway 190 for 19 miles to Scotty’s Castle Road. Turn right (east) and drive 33 miles (just before the Grapevine entrance station and three miles before reaching Scotty’s Castle) to the campground entrance road on the left. Turn left and drive two miles to the campground.

Confirmed by 2 users | Last reported on April 09, 2024The rate reflects the half price senior park pass. Mesquite Spring campground is 2 miles down hill almost into the wash. The roads are paved and the sites are gravel and well spaced, but not terribly level. Very dark at night - the stars are amazing. This is a great jumping off point to go to the Racetrack. Heed the park advice and start out in the morning. It took us 2 hours to drive each way. Also, as Scotty's castle is closed right now, there is very little traffic on the roads in the northern part of the park so it is a great place to ride a bike! No cell service.

This is our favorite cg in Death Valley. It is not like the parking lot campgrounds near the visitor centers. Mesquite Springs is along a giant wash that was fun to explore and very close to Ubehebe Crater that has a great rim hike. It is quiet and dark.

The campsites are well maintained, flat and pretty large. There are washrooms onsite and a place to wash your dishes.
The only downside was that it was really windy the day we were there, not much in the way to block the wind but we still had a great night and I would stay here again.

All first come first serve sites. Half price with our senior pass. It was pretty uncrowded when we were there, as it was pretty darn cold.
Surrounded by 8'000 ft mountains. A storm blew in from the north and the wind howled for the 48 hours we were there. And it snowed all over the mountains and rained on the campground some even! It felt like Mt Everest when we went up to hike the Ubehebe Crater rim.
I was surprised to find flush toilets, (instead of pit toilets) in this desert environment. That Mesquite Springs really puts the water out. There is a working dump station too. This campground is in the far Northern section of Death Valley. Far from the busy crowds of the Furnace Creek area.

Nice campground with water and dump station at the entrance and picnic table and fire ring at each site. The sites vary in size from smaller to extra large for big rigs.

The farthest Northern developed campground in Death Valley. We are so glad it's still first come first serve. If you come in before 2 pm (or so) you'll get your choice of spots. We always come mid week, and not on weekends, holidays or Spring break...No part of the campground got washed out by all the rain in 2023...
Bring everything (food supplies, ice, etc) you'll need for your stay because this is WAY out in the middle of nowhere. And the general store in Furnace Creek is pretty sparce and a long way aways.
