If you're in the Black Hills and are looking for a quiet private park with views- this is it! Most of the private parks in this very touristy area are large, cramped and noisy. This place is the exact opposite. With only a handful of RV sites, most with only water and electric, this place is not a big attraction for those looking for a campground with all the amenities. There is no pool for the kids, or playground, or mini-golf. What there is are nice sites with gorgeous views of the surrounding meadow and hills, very friendly and accommodating owners, and a peaceful atmosphere all for a very reasonable price. As a bonus you also get a wildlife show every morning and evening when the Pronghorn Antelope graze in the nearby field. The Roost Resort is also centrally located near the town of Custer only a short drive from Mt. Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Monument, and tons of hiking in the Custer State Park. We loved this place and enjoyed 6 nights here while exploring the Black Hills.

Roost Resort is just outside of Custer and makes a great base for a stay in the Black Hills and everything you would want to do in the area is easily accessible. The resort is a mix of little cabin rentals and water/electric RV sites. Unlike the plethora of other RV parks the immediate area, this park gem. It's very small so you don't feel like jam packed, the owner is blend of cowboy and hippie, bathrooms & showers are spotless, and when you fill your grey tank, just drain it into the field (as encouraged by the owner).
Sites are not level and the park is definitely on the older side, but didn't let these facts keep you away. This place is fantastic. I'd imagine larger Class B or Class A rigs might have issues accessing, but we had no issues our 27' trailer.

The Roost Resort is a secluded haven just outside the town of Custer. This resort is a small cluster of 12 campsites and cabins run by Frank and Susan, friendly hosts who keep everything clean and well-maintained. Free-range chickens wander the property. It suited us perfectly. We had at most two neighbors, and we enjoyed a very laid-back atmosphere. Each evening and morning we watched pronghorn and deer come out to graze in the fields. The Roost Resort was a perfect base for our exploration of Custer State Park, and we’d love to spend more time here.

We stayed here three nights while visiting Custer State Park. Small campground and cabins, very well maintained and close to the park and to the town of Custer. Owners couldn't be nicer or more accommodating! We actually changed our return plans to stop here again.

We only stayed here one night because of a gap between our reservations at campgrounds within Custer State Park, but we could have stayed here a week and been very happy. The park is a very small private facility with only about a dozen RV sites and a handful of rental cabins, so it is very quiet and uncrowded. The RV area overlooks a broad flat field where wildlife frolic, with great views of classic Black Hills granite jutting up in the distance. The RV sites are reminiscent of a state park (gravel, not particularly level, with water and electric service only) and because of the configuration it could be hard to get in or out if all the sites are full. That being said, we only had a few neighbors and it was glorious. We loved the frequent wildlife visits, the utilities worked perfectly, and the bathrooms were immaculate.
The location is ideal for visiting Custer State Park (the only better option to camp inside the park itself!), Mount Rushmore, etc., but is also close to the town of Custer for easy access to groceries, gas, and restaurants. The hosts (new owners Tom and Shelah) were incredibly welcoming as well. We loved everything about our (short) stay.

I don't understand why this site has the ratings it does. It hardly seemed worth the pricetag. The site was small, and unless you get the premier spots facing the adjacent field to watch the deer in the evening, the sites are underwhelming. I definitely expected something different based on the pictures we saw before we arrived.

Our hosts Tom and Shelah were very accommodating. cabin was clean and very well stocked.Wifi was adequate. an abundance of wildlife around and it was soothing to watch. As a handicapped person, I think it would be nice to have one cabin have a bathroom be handicap accessible. Although our hosts happily provided a chair for the shower. The grounds were very well maintained

We really rested at this location. Our rig is 35 ft so we fit most anywhere (42ft plus may not fit as well, but call the resort and ask them). We chose space 11 even though it only has 30 amp and water (no dump, but there is an easy access dump in the park). The view across the field was teaming with wild turkeys, white tailed deer, horses and Canadian geese. Stunning sunrises and sunsets.
Our rate reflected a veteran discount.
I gave the site quality a 4 star only because our site was grassy and gravel.

We just stayed at this resort for several days and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very close to all the tourist sites. We had a peaceful site located at the back of the campground. The owners were fantastic. Very easy to talk to and informative. We enjoyed watching the deer in the evening and the bath house was immaculate. I am definitely coming back and staying here.

When we decided last minute to go on a trip to South Dakota, we forgot about Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and realized we may not find a place. The Roost Resort had one spot left, and we should have known when they had to verify if our rig could fit it was going to be a tight squeeze with some advanced maneuverability. This is a small, tranquil lot, which made it harder to get into slot 12, which was up a slope where you couldn't directly back up into it (since someone was in slot 11), you had to backwards turn into it. It was quite a challenge for us newbies, but it ended up working out. The box/water ended up on the wrong side of our trailer, but everything reached. The view was great! Despite the headache of getting into that spot, we really liked our stay. Because there are only 12 spots, it didn't feel crowded at all. The cell service was really good, and how close this is to Custer, Crazy Horse, Wind Cave and Mt. Rushmore is fantastic. We already want to come back and spend more time in the area, and we would definitely stay here again. Just not in slot 12.
