“on Nat'l Registry of Historic Places”

The Wagon Wheel Cabins were built in the chaotic times of 1935 when the nation was barely out of depression and the dust bowl had destroyed millions of acres of land. Robert W. & Margaret Martin were the first owners of the Wagon Wheel Cabins, purchasing the land in late 1934. The Martins hired Leo Friesenhan to do the building. Records show they worked on all the buildings at the same time and the local farmers carried the stone to him. Leo’s combination of stone, design, and nearly indestructible mortar recipe has endured for 75 years, giving the Wagon Wheel its spot on the National Registry of Historic Places.

This is a lovely place to stay along Route 66. However, I agree with Carolyn that whoever was running the place when I was there wasn't super friendly. Maybe I just met her on a bad day, but I was looking forward to a friendly chat and I was super excited to be there since I've wanted to stay at the Wagon Wheel Motel since forever, but she was pretty cold and just not interested in being friendly.

Tourist Trap! Told them I found them through this site. I followed link and rooms stated $60 dbl $69 queen. Called and requested one of them they told me they had a dbl. When we got there they charged us $97 for two ppl, I disputed, they basically said too bad (they had me b/c it was late) and told us a dbl was for 2 dbl beds and they had nothing else on a Monday night. Room was nothing that would warrant $97, no rugs, sink in room, coffeemaker was on register. We stayed at the TeePee Hotel in Holbrook, AZ last year they should take a lesson from them. My advice, stay elsewhere and stop and take a few pictures.

Nice place to lay your head.
Rooms are small. But just fine for a place to sleep on your road trip.
Nice outside seating area to relax in the evenings. I enjoyed my stay.

Old school charm with updated modern amenities. Nice grounds to wander around. We arrived late, but checking in was easy.

Stay away! My wife and granddaughter had plans to drive to Arizona to visit my granddaughter's godmother. Their first overnight stay was to be at the Wagon Wheel Inn. They made their reservation far in advance. On the first day of their trip they stopped at a rest area outside of Springfield, Illinois to take a short break. When my wife was returning to the car she stepped off a curb and fell breaking her arm and dislocating her elbow causing her severe pain. She was treated at a local ER for her injuries. Needless to say their vacation had to be cancelled and my brother and I had to drive to Springfield to pick her up and bring her car home. She called the Wagon Wheel Inn to cancel her reservation and was told by the owner that she would still be charged for the room because she did not cancel 24 hours before her scheduled arrival time. Apparently my wife should have scheduled her accident and ER visit accordingly. Heartless people indeed!

The motel grounds are very nice. Rooms are very small but clean and comfortable. We ate at the BBQ restaurant nextdoor which was really good. Check out the neat murals in town.

Cute place. They were full when we arrived so we couldn't stay. Call ahead for reservations.
