“Amazing community park”
Landscape Management recognized this 85-acre riverfront park as one of the top 100 parks in the nation for design, reputation, and accessibility. Designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh, it features an 84-foot observation tower, a covered bridge, People Trails, fishing at two lakes, picnic shelters, playground equipment, horseshoe pits, basketball courts, and an amphitheater that hosts concerts and performances.
Beautiful, quiet municipal mark. Don't know what more you could ask for. Bring mosquito repellant if walking the (pretty short) trails.
For it’s “genre” - (forgive me, I’m a constant book reviewer so more than likely my review will have more than enough metaphors with the Park and a new (ly read)! And just like a book, )
I'm going to rate each "part" separately - like chapters - because this park serves a lot of roles to a lot of people (locals and non just alike....
Kayaking from Flatcreek River to Mill Race - 3/5. There isn't a clearly marked enter/exit area because it doesn't exist. It's a Southern Indiana "beach" which is sure to include families fishing and swimming during the dog days of summer, so that can be weird (it happened once ....😱😬)
But the beach almost is my preferred exit now since it's so much roomier and you are less likely to encounter crowds of groups waiting to go like you do at smaller launches.
Still, wear water shoes and seriously see Indiana as it would have appeared 100 years ago... We saw many beautiful, rare birds, chimpunks, fox; you name it! (even an eagles nest )Oh and the huge butterflies and brightly colored dragonflies!! It can't get any more Indiana than that!
*about a 10 minute drive from town or for a longer experience- another great boat launch is further up inTaylorsville (you really just have to google it 🤷🏼♀️ for direction) to here being the End Route in Mill Race.
As an event location :4/5
They have two "shelter houses" that are available to reserve for CHEAP! And the shelter houses are not like any you've seen with metal and cement and strange shaped "roofs", but they are smaller so you are able to set up your own tents, shelter houses, tables, etc beautifully and the one towards the front is the smaller one, but it has great parking for handicapped guests and beautiful, ANCIENT, huge trees providing as much shade as you could ask for along with a beautiful "backdrop" to easily turn in to a "magical', memory filled event by adding some "wildflower"-ish arrangements where you can ans some solar powered or battery powered fairy lights and some giant latex balloons filled with glitter in the trees with crepe papers and your guests will forget it's the same park they took their 3 year old to last week to play at the playground.
Instagram Ready! There are several Korak moment areas at the park and it's not unusual to see photographers filming the surroundings or families doing photo shoots in the covered bridge or couples taking engagement pics inside the "abstract tunnel" with perfect natural light peeking through the vines that have settled into their forever home of the metal and plastic abnormality.
Basketball - they have a lot of courts that are well maintained and their always packed!!
