“Devoted to art, history, science and technology”
Housed in the historic 1893 Columbia Mill textile building, our "biggest artifact," the South Carolina State Museum tells the story of South Carolina through our many exhibits and programs. Come and enjoy art, cultural history, natural history, science and technology. Many of the museums displays are interconnected. You will find there is history in our art, artistic beauty in our natural history and science, and history behind our technology. South Carolina State Museum has four large floors devoted to the disciplines of art, history, natural history and science/technology. It houses both long-term exhibits and five changing exhibit galleries. The State Museum has more than 70,000 artifacts in its collection, and it is still a very young institution.
This isn't your typical state history museum, this is a museum worthy of national acclaim in my opinion. Loads of exhibits and the fact that it's housed in a massive former textile mill lets them put in tons of displays. Absolutely worth a stop!
