This campground could be very nice one day but right now it's dusty and worn out and desperately in need of road repairs and paving. The campground is close to the Revolutionary War historic battlefield Kings Mountain and hiking nearby, an hour from Charlotte.

In its heyday this was a big beautiful park. Now it is in need of some serious updating but the state is not investing money in its parks. On our visit a non profit group was doing some fund raising and upgrade work on the park.
I have two Youtube videos of the park and they can be found in the blog tab here.

Stayed her 9/9/2017 to 9/12/2017 to avoid hurricane. Liked this place as a great historical location to visit. We also went hiking at nearby NC kings mountain.

Campsite is very unlevel, very close to other sites. It is pretty and they have a trading post that stay open till 8pm. Clean bathrooms, nice lake.

We stayed here over Memorial Day weekend. Since it was a holiday weekend we knew it would be crowded but we also knew we wouldn't be at the campground except to eat and sleep. The roads are not well maintained and the sites are not marked well. We missed our site the first drive through and had to make the full loop to find it. There is absolutely no privacy between sites. They did have a "golf cart parade" that would have been fun for kinds and families - just not our thing. The bath houses are in dire need of updating and they do not provide hand soap or a way to dry your hands. They are very dirty and need even some basic cleaning.

Kings Mountain State Park is a great retreat for locals and those passing through, interested in the Revolutionary War battle at Kings Mountain. My husband camped here as a child and remembered swimming in the pond, but none of that is available now. Hiking trails go around the dam and pond, providing beautiful views. Our site easily accommodated our 36' motorhome, although some leveling was required. While in the campground, we visited the Trading Post. They have ice cream and other items for sale. Their dump stations were very clean and it looked like the trash area was recently improved. We noticed several large buildings that may be used during peak events, but were not in use while we were camping.

Reading previous reviews, I agree that many of the sites are unlevel and only have 30 amp electric and water, no sewer except for campground host sites. Also, as we exited the campground with our rig, driving through was tight but not impossible. The campground host was very friendly. The children's playground area was nice and well-maintained. Trails connect the National Park and Crowders Mountain State Park, but we did not try any of those.

Driving through park areas seemed crowded but area around our site was spacious. Level wooded, site. Lots of children around.

Easy on an off the highway and entrance was through a beautiful national park. My 12'10" rig did some tree trimming on the way into the park, so be careful if you are a taller rig. Beautiful fully stocked store, beautiful wooded and shaded campsites and a number of trails. They do have some 50A sites, but most are 30 and did not see sewer. Overall a wonderful park!

Don't believe the Verizon reviews as I walked the entire park hoping to find Verizon over 1 bar. Site 39 was the dreaded Verizon Circle with Line Through IT! :-( T-Mobile allowed me to work.

For the week we stayed at KMSP, it was fairly quiet, except the Friday afternoon (and Sunday morning) traffic. We enjoyed the hiking trails, and love that they recycle! (#1-2 plastic and aluminum) The bath house near site 62 has been recently remodeled and is the nicest and cleanest we’ve ever seen.

The camp office (“Trading Post”) was on winter hours though that weren’t published anywhere: 11am-12pm and 4-5pm daily. Several of the bath houses were closed for the winter too, so we ended up moving from site 51 to 62 to be closer, and we had to wait a few hours from 2pm check in to 4pm office hours in order to make the move. But camp staff were very friendly and helpful.

There’s a locking gate after 6pm each night that requires you to get out of your vehicle to input the code into the physical lock and open the gates and close them again behind you. Something to be aware of since it’s not very ADA friendly.

This park is about an hour outside of Charlotte, so not necessarily close to lots of city amenities. But we found what we needed in Kings Mountain (15 min) and Gastonia (30 min) NC.

And cell service is dismal!
