“the birthplace of Lucy Ware Webb Hayes.”
This four room, center hall Federal Style home is the birthplace of Lucy Ware Webb, who became the wife and helpmate of the 19th President of the United States, Rutherford B. Hayes. The parlor and bedroom are furnished with antiques and we have 5 showcases of Hayes memorabilia. Lucy was born August 28, 1831 to Dr. James & Maria Cook Webb. Education was very important to the family and she is the first "First Lady" to have a college degree. Come hear the history of the house and Lucy! Lucy Webb Hayes was born in this small frame house August 28, 1831, the third child of Dr. James & Maria Cook Webb. Lucy married Rutherford B. Hayes December 30, 1852. Lucy's kindness, great moral courage, and earnest religious convictions contributed greatly to her husband's success. Lucy was the first "First Lady" to be so called by the press. Because Lucy discouraged the use of alcohol in the White House, the derisive title "Lemonade Lucy" was bestowed on her.
Very nice historic house, restored well, in period style if not to exactly the way it looked originally. Home of the "first First Lady," because she might have been the first to be called that.... Read more
