“Historical Victorian-era cemetery”
A private cemetery since its beginning, Graceland was established in 1860 by Thomas Bryan, a lawyer with a successful Chicago practice. He purchased its original 80 acres and received a perpetual charter from Illinois in 1861, and soon hired prominent landscape architect H.W.S. Cleveland to plan its park-like ambiance.
Cool, but closes early (4:00pm). There is parking inside.
Graceland Cemetery holds the memories of all the architects, builders etc. of people that rebuilt Chicago after the great fire.
If you purchase a tour guide when you enter then you will be informed about all these people buried there and about all the historical background.
If you are interested in architecture, then you will be impressed by how many famous architects such as Mies Van De Rohe where involved at the construction of this memorial - cemetery. Very educational place and good to explore.
Beautiful
One of the greatest Midwest park cemeteries. Be sure to grab a nap from the office for interesting monuments and notable graves. There are also tours.
