If you have access to a boat a cool time to visit Lake Michigan is in Spring (April-May) after the ice has melted, but the algae hasn't bloomed yet. The clear water means shipwreaks are much more easily spotted.
Spring, Summer, Winter or Fall - the lakefront is a cool place. Walk, run, bike, sail along the shoreline. The lakefront trail is 18 miles and connects beaches and recreational stops located along the lakefront and is a great route for cycling to work. The South Shore Cultural Center, Museum of Science and Industry, McCormick Place convention center, Solder Field (da Bears!), Navy Pier (new Ferris Wheel that can be used year-round) are among the many fab features of Chicago's shore!
