“Representing a unique chapter of Carthage”
The late Victorian era Phelps family mansion at 1146 Grand Avenue recalls a day of opulence and elegance which represents a unique identifying chapter in the history of Carthage. A huge building by present day standards and a showplace of the community from the time of its completion, the house has three full floors and a full basement. Decorated with period furnishings, the structure remains little changed in the interior and exterior from the days when it was occupied by the busy productive family of William Phelps (1845-1916) who designed the residence and supervised its construction in 1895. Rich wooden paneling, unique fireplaces of varying marbles and tiles, and beautiful stained glass windows are featured throughout the house. Much of the present furnishings and renovation of the structure have been provided by generous contributors and interested friends of the Phelps House. Proceeds from tour fees and rentals are used by Carthage Historic Preservation to maintain the historic home and continue its development. Owned and Managed by Carthage Historic Preservation, Inc.
