“From historic hospital to hotel”
The hospital buildings were designed in 1870 in the Kirkbride Plan by architect Henry Hobson Richardson with grounds by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Includes the newly-renovated Hotel Henry Urban Resort Conference Center and several buildings in a preserved state of ruin open for public tours.
Gorgeous piece of old Buffalo, but with a really dark past. While it's worth visiting the grounds for some pictures, it's absolutely worth taking advantage of their occasional tours through the building, so be sure to call ahead before visiting.
Whenever I give someone a tour of Buffalo, this is always on the list. It's a really tall and beautiful old complex. It's also really awesome to see at night because it's all lit up and looks really ominous. I heard they are turning it into a hotel, which should lead to some interesting encounters given it's history.
Tours are occasionally available, visit this site for details: http://www.kirkbridebuildings.com/blog/tag/Buffalo-State-Hospital
