“Best Place in Arkansas to Get Kissed!”
The main section of the Upper Buffalo Wilderness was designated in 1974 with additional acreages created by the 1984 Arkansas Wilderness Act totaling approximately 12.000 acres. This is one of the 3 wildernesses on the Buffalo Ranger District. The forest cover is mostly second and third growth oak-hickory. Some scattered stands of shortleaf pine in old fields still exist from when the Forest Service purchased the land in the 1930s and 1940s. The route to Hawksbill Crag is the only designated hiking trail located in the wilderness. The trail is developed but unmarked. A system of old lodging roads that runs throughout the area provides and informal network of trails for hiking and horseback rising. There are four developed access points to reach the Upper Buffalo Wilderness : Hawksbill Crag, Kapark Cemetery, Dahl Memorial, and Boen Gulf. Point of interest- Hawksbill Crag Rock Formation.
This is one of our favorite places in Arkansas! Enjoy the trail but grab a walking stick at the top to help you down the first part of the trail. It is absolutely breath taking!
It's a little tricky to get to the first time but I visit this spot often and the scenery is breathe taking every time highly recommend it and while there make sure to check out horse shoe canyon ranch!
if you go to the website and follow their directions....go south on 21 then left onto road number 5...which will take you to hawksbill crag and the parking lot and trailhead to whitaker point....i was a little lost looking for it as the website never mentioned road 5
This place has been photographed more than any place in Arkansas. Just beautiful and a sure place I need to visit !!!!! :O)
This place is absolutely gorgeous in the spring and fall
Great trail. I wouldn't call it easy but it's not hard for someone in decent shape. The view was beautiful and well worth the time it took to get there. The drive up was intense, I'm glad I had an SUV, but plenty of cars were up there.
LOVE!!!!!!
Easy hike with plenty of places to stop and explore... Great views , pack a lunch , go the day after rain !
This is totally worth going to! We got a little turned around, coming from Ponca if you cross the Buffalo river you went to far. You want to get off on the street 9650, which is the road immediately before the bridge on the rghtThe road up the mountain is gravel and steep. I would definitely recommend taking an SUV. But if you don't have access don't worry because my little Ford Fiesta made it, just get a running start at the Hills. The hike itself is pretty easy
