“finest college facility in the nation”

For the majority of the year, the Bill Armstrong Stadium hosts the seven-time NCAA National Champion IU Soccer Team. However, every april, the stadium opens up to the event that founded most of Bloomington's reputation--the Little 500. The famous 500-lap relay cycle race is known as the premier inter collegial cycling event in the country and was introduced as early as 1951. It occurs in conjunction with city-wide celebrations annually. In 1979, the event was captured in Oscar-winning movie Breaking Away, in which the Armstrong stadium/Bloomington is prominently featured.
