“in the heart of Bethel’s historic district”
The Chapman Inn is a delightfully quaint inn located in the heart of Bethel’s historic district, overlooking the town common. We include our world famous full gourmet breakfast, as well as warm genuine hospitality with every stay.
There are plenty of bed-and-breakfasts in Maine, and the Chapman Inn in Bethel is one of them. What really sets it apart though, are the otherworldly guests who refused to check out. Considered the only officially "certified haunted" inn in Maine, according to the paranormal experts, the Chapman is a bona fide haunter.
The Chapman Inn is rumored to be haunted by two separate spirits, Abigail Chapman and her nanny companion. During her lifetime, Abigail was a sickly child and died at the young age of 16. She was the infirm daughter of William Rogers Chapman, who owned and lived in the inn for many years.
Abigail's nanny, known as the "companion," was the child's only friend, and understandably, Abigail became very attached to her. After the young girl's death, the companion stayed at Chapman Inn, and according to the legend, she eventually became William's mistress until his death in 1927.
Many people who stay at the inn experience a variety of bizarre, unexplainable things. Eyewitnesses have experienced doors opening and closing by themselves, and strange, cold gusts of wind that mysteriously fill rooms. Many people have also experienced the disembodied voices of a very young woman whispering in rooms where no one is staying. Many believe the voices belong to Abigail and her companion, who continue haunting the inn today, refusing to leave the house they loved in life.
The strangest and most famous of all sightings at the Chapman Inn involves a mysterious black cat that has been spotted on many occasions darting through solid walls. No one knows who the owned the cat, though many speculate it belonged to Abigail.
Today the Chapman Inn invites guest to spend the night at one of its many historic rooms. Hosts encourage visitors to ask questions about the many strange paranormal experiences that have been witnessed at the Inn over the course of many years.
