“in the midst of the scenic wooded hills of Southern Ohio”
587-acre Pike Lake State Park is located in the midst of the scenic wooded hills of southern Ohio. The small 13-acre lake and surrounding state forest contribute to the park's rustic charm. Pike Lake region is located in the unglaciated portion of the Appalachian plateau in Ohio. As the Appalachian Mountains were uplifted, this plateau was created west of the new mountain range. The plateau marks the boundary between the hilly eastern section of Ohio and the flatter western portions. Just thirty miles west of Pike Lake, the terrain changes dramatically from forested hills to rolling farmland. The landscape of Pike Lake is characterized by dense forests of oak, hickory, tulip, ash and other hardwoods. Several outcroppings of the sandstone bedrock have been exposed in the park. The dense forest and remote location of Pike Lake create excellent habitat for Ohio's forest game animals. White-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, gray squirrel, rabbit and the elusive wild turkey are abundant. Other mammals in the park include skunk, opossum, raccoon and red fox. Reptiles include the box turtle, black snake, five-lined skink and the endangered timber rattlesnake. The forest is known for its variety of ferns, mosses, lichens and fungi. The wildflowers are diverse, creating spectacular displays--spring through autumn.

Confirmed by 2 users | Last reported on July 09, 2021Just did a quick one night trip here to keep the gear fresh and it seemed like a nice place I could get to quickly (not quite 2 hour drive from where I was). Sites were plentiful on a reasonably warm weeknight and there were very few neighbors scattered. It seemed like good quality for both tent and RV camping; I was camping in a tent but took an electric site to play games on my computer. There are plenty of places nearby to buy food and you’re not too far off the beaten path. Tree quality and lake views above average. I can imagine this place is a different story on weekends but on this night it was almost all to myself.

Pike Lake SP campground is a nice spot. Looks like everything's been updated recently- all the interior roads and camp pads all repaved. When we arrived on a Wednesday, probably 20 sites were occupied (out of 79) so it was real quiet. Filling up on the weekend of course.
Only negative is the lake water isn't so great. Too many Canadian geese hanging around it.

The loveliest site ever. Park-like campground with shade, smooth asphalt road and pads surrounded by forested hills. Lots of families on weekends. Lake was hand-dug by Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. It's fed by local creek, so turns muddy after rain.
Downsides are NO Verizon coverage and speeding on the road into and through the park. I considered this a major problem given no attention by management.

Campground was about a quarter full during the week when I stayed there in early Oct. Electric only hookups. Bathroom with showers were dated but okay. They are at the front of the campground. A couple of vault toilets are farther back into the campground. This is next to the small Pike Lake. There are about half a dozen trails within walking distance of the campground not to mention the Buckeye Trail also passes through here. Good place to camp if you are looking for a quiet stay. Most sites were level and clean. A little close together but not to bad. And probably not too busy at least during the week so room to spread out a little. I actually had probably at least 150 feet between me and the nearest camper when I was there as most people seemed to camp closer to the front of the campground.
