We were looking for an overnight spot and saw this forest service campground just off the highway. It is a small loop with mostly unlevel sites but we managed to find a nice pull-through. There is road noise but very little traffic along 50, especially at night, so it didn't bother us. We found dirt roads behind the campground for an evening walk in the woods. The campground had just opened for the season and the water was turned on and restrooms were open but there was no place to put a payment so we spent a free night. It is normally $10/night or $5 with the senior pass.
If the campground is full or no suitable site is available we found a couple level, good sized boondocking spots just outside the campground that looked well-used.

When you are driving along Highway 50 The Loneliest Road in America this is a great stop to rest your weary head.

This campground isn't free - it's actually $10 per night. But it has water, trash collection, and pit toilets. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. It also has great views of the area and gorgeous starry skies. Some sites are pull-through and a few sites are mostly level, but many aren't. The CG is First Come First Served, we pulled in at 4pm and had our pick of spots, but the campground filled up as the evening went on.

Sites are large and while there is a lot of shade in the park, most of the sites are open for those who need solar power.

The town of Austin is a few miles down the road if you need to gas-up or grab an ice-cream in the hot summer temperatures.

This is a beautiful little campground off Highway 50 a few miles east of Austin, NV. We fit a 36ft motorhome and the attached tow vehicles in one of their pull-throughs.
Plenty of trails right outside the campground provided a good hike with the dogs.

When we arrived, the sign said closed. Since spending the night there was our plan, we pulled in anyway. We'd read that camping just outside the gates was also acceptable, so that was plan B. Fortunately a forestry person was there and said that we were welcomed to stay; the water and bathrooms weren't open yet, but people were camping there already. This campground is usually $10, but without bathrooms/water they weren't yet charging folks for staying. There are about 9 sites and a group area. Some sites are pull through. They are all pretty small. We fit fine and could have parked the truck behind our rig. We did have one of the larger sites, and it wasn't big at all. Was a quiet night in this rustic campground.

This is a cute little campground located right off hwy 50, about 10 miles East of Austin. When I arrived, I could not find an envelope to pay, or any information on the rate. I asked the forest service worker and he said the camp is currently free until they get the water turned back on (some of the spouts were already working but some are still off). Bathrooms were open and being maintained. There were a couple other campers at the camp through the weekend but most stayed one night and moved on. Campground seems to fill up by late afternoon each day and then empty out again each morning. About an equal mix of RV/tent campers but larger RVs would have trouble navigating the tight turns and small spaces. I found a pullthrough that accommodated my truck and 25' TT but it was sloped quite a bit. Not a problem once unhitched and leveled but would have been difficult to level with the truck attached, as the slope was upward. Small amount of road noise from hwy 50 and a steady stream of would-be campers driving through looking for spots. I had plenty of sun for solar and blazing fast Verizon service. For me, it was the perfect base camp to explore the nearby area without dragging the trailer all over. Would come back again and happily pay the standard rate of $10.

Great cell service, bathrooms a little sketchy, serene at night, bring extra leveling blocks to get level. Awesome trails and views!

We stayed two nights at Bob Scott, a small NF campground just off of Hwy 50. The main draw for us was the Cahill Valley Loop mountain bike trail which can be accessed just across the road from the campground. We’d read some very positive reviews, but were disappointed in the campground.

We arrived fairly early on a Monday and found the place deserted. It’s small, with only 10 sites and we had our pick of spots which was a good thing. Only a few spaces will easily accommodate a larger rig, say anything over 24 foot, and even fewer are anywhere close to level. Each spot has a fire ring and picnic table.

The sites are a combination of pull-through and back-in, with adequate separation. The road and sites are paved. Most have shade, although some are more in the open. There is one group site that is large enough for any size rig. No dump station and no way to attach a hose to any of water spigots.

What we found disconcerting was the general state of disrepair and neglect. The bathrooms were dirty and unkept, the men’s was padlocked shut. Every one of the water spigots was damaged and most did not work at all. The garbage cans were stuffed full and there was garbage left in some of the campsites. Even so, by nightfall the campground was nearly full.

There are 4x4 roads up the hill behind the campground for walking/biking/exploring. The Cahill Valley Loop Trail, turned out to also be entirely 4x4 road and was a bit of a disappointment.

We had 4 bars of Verizon 4G unboosted.

We have a 36’ fifth wheel that fit easily into site 7. We didn’t even have to unhook. There were at least 4 other pull through sites that were long enough to accommodate our rig.
The Mountain View we had was beautiful.
Sites are on a first come basis. Our cost was $5.00 with an America Beautiful pass, without a pass $10.00.

Great view, pinion woods, dirt roads, chipmunks, nearby cows. Tucked into a hollow in the mountains, convent to Austin which is a great place to stop and walk around.
There are primitive bathrooms and several spigots for water. Dirt roads and campsites. Some pull through. We are 33' + toad and did fit a couple of them. Not too level but we managed to work with it. The federal old folks pass cut our price to $5 a night.
