“one of Iowa's first state parks”
Wapsipinicon State Park, dedicated in 1923, was one of Iowa's first state parks. It lies just south of Anamosa on the Wapsipinicon River (locally referred to as the Wapsi). The sandstone and limestone bluffs in the 394-acre park are covered with moss and columbine. Hiking through a multitude of flowers, trees and wildlife leads one to splendid views from the bluffs. There are two lodges which are ideal for group events such as wedding receptions and family reunions. The Boy Scout Lodge has a microwave, refrigerator, tables and running water. The Rotary lodge has a stove, refrigerator, tables and running water. It also has a modern restroom and is available year-round. Within park; Boat Launch Ramp, Boating, Camping - Electric, Camping - Nonelectric, Camping - Youth Group, Cross Country Skiing, Day-use Lodge, Dump Station, Fishing, Hiking, Horseshoe Pits, Jogging/Running, Modern Campground, Picnic Area, Picnic Shelter, Restrooms, River, Showers, Snowmobiling, Stream/Creek, Trails, Cross County Skiing, Trails, Hiking, Trails, Snowmobile, Walking, Wildlife Viewing

Not very private, and the shower house was like a horror film, but it's not right on a busy road, there are many walking paths and it feels very remote while being only a few minutes from town. The caves are interesting, though not awe inspiring. I enjoyed the nature and my stay.
Clarification: there are electric sites, but we chose non-electric and it was only 11 bucks for the night.
Pulled in late night and left early for quick ZZZs in tent rather than car. $11 site no electric, but plenty of open sites (Wed nite) and a really loud owl. Not far off 151 so good for quick stop.
The state park campground is very small and the sites are very close together. They have a lot of fallen branches from the winter as no one has occupied them. The sites are also short as the our travel trailer is 19ft and have the nose of our SUV and back of the trailer on our site boundary but thankfully they are pull thru sites with electricity. The Verizon cell reception is great. Bathroom (Pit toilets) are open but the water spigots have been turned off as it is still too early in the season.

The campground is small and only a small amount have electric sites. We finally found the water spigot near the bathrooms. Bathrooms are small with one shower stall each. Not real clean and water pressure is minimal. The closest dump station is 7 miles back the way we came. Very few level sites. Great for tents but I don't think this site was meant for a large RV. The park is nice and shady. There are some great hiking trails and caves. The river is about a half mile down the street with a boat ramp. It was pretty buggy during our visit. There is a Walmart within 2 miles and the motor cycle museum in town is great to visit. Over all not a bad place to spend a night or 2 but I wouldn't recommend a longer stay.

First of all believe your gps and Do not turn off E Main Street at the first State Park sign. Continue through town and follow the road curve to the left and then turn at the next State Park sign. The check in and payment is on the honor system and while the website would not allow us to reserve, there were sites marked and tagged as such. For tent campers there is a good sized area. There are very few electrical hookups and no water/sewer. The bathroom was reasonably tidy but tiny and in need of restoration. All in all we had a very peaceful night. We haul a 37 ft fifth wheel and there were only 3 sites that would have worked and just one was a pull through. If we had anything other than a fifth wheel, we would return, especially since there is a golf course right next door.

We ended up here sort of by accident, but liked the pull-through sites and the trails/caves--though constant rainfall kept us from getting the full experience of the place. Right next to a golf course if you like that kind of thing.
