“From humble beginnings”
The Ackerman Winery had its very humble beginnings in the basement of the South Amana home of Harry and Louisa Ackerman in 1956. One hundred gallons each of Concord Grape and Rhubarb were the only wines produced. Today, second generation owners Les & Linda Ackerman, have expanded that list from 2 to 22. They are proud to have the distinction of running the oldest operating winery in the state of Iowa. Relocated to the main colony of Amana in 2001, the large handicapped assessable shop is a comfortable destination. Visitors are encouraged to take their own self-guided tour where they are able to observe all parts of the wine cellar from the press room, to the production and filtering area, to the 15,000 gallons of stainless steel storage tanks to the bottling system and finally to the shelf. The best part of all is the tasting bar which is open daily and offers complimentary samples. We are pleased to present some of the most exotic varieties around. We do make the traditional wines, such as Riesling, Pinot Grigio & Merlot. However, the unusual, slightly sweeter wines, such as Dandelion, Mango, Pomegranate and Red Raspberry are where we feel we really shine. In addition to enjoying a sample of wine, our bright spacious shop has a delightful collection of many unique and affordable gift items. If you are looking for different wine glasses, great wine racks, unusual wine gadgets, tee shirts (plain and with bling) or decorative bottle holders we have hundreds to choose from as well as a full line of other quality merchandise.
