Confirmed by 3 users | Last reported on June 17, 2022The campground in the Castle Rocks SP is actually called Smoky Mountain Campground which is a bit of a misnomer as there's not really a mountainous feeling. More like desert chapparal.
We were here in early October and there were lots of sites available. Camping fee includes a $5 a day motor vehicle entrance fee. Showers for non-residents are $3 which seems fair especially since they're clean and each has its own entrance. Flush toilets. There's an RV dump station nearby and each site has water and 30 amp electrical service.
Location-wise, it's a few miles from the action— the fabulously exotic City of Rocks— so if you'd like to have a front row seat to the cool boulders, hikes and rock climbing attractions within City of Rocks, check out the dry camping alternatives a few miles down the road at 1/3 the price.
The cute town of Almo is a mile down the road and stocks all the essentials.

State of ID is to be commended!! This park is beautiful. When we were there last week, mid Sept., we were about 200 feet below the snow line. Park is right off the entrance to City of Rocks National Preserve which is absolutely stunning.
Lots of room in almost all the sites and they were very well maintained. We had 50A and water. Appreciated the 50A as it was 34 to 38 degrees most of the time. All roads paved with some very large pull thru sites. Big rig friendly for most all sites. Great cell service too!!! Not much in the town of Almo, but Tracy General Store was cute and carried the forget me nots!!

One of my favorite places to stay at! It’s off the beaten path, but if you like quietness, starry skies, rock climbing, or hiking- this is the place. Super clean, nice showers and bathrooms. The scenery is wonderful. Cell on AT&T was good. I remember coming here years ago and not getting any cell service, but now it’s not a problem.

Worked remotely from Castle Rocks State Park, had to use a high gain Yagi antenna setup to snag 2 bars from the tower across the valley. The park is clean, well maintained and very busy. It can get very cold up in Almo so plan for big temperature swings.

OK I’ll give it 5 stars because this place is really sweet: paved level pad, electric, water, space between sites, great views. At $44 it seems a bit pricey...especially with the showers not available due to Covid 19.

Although there are a lot of campsites in this campground, they are well-spaced and because each one faces a forested area or has other pretty view, you don't seem to realize other people are there. Very quiet, very clean. Because my unit is self-contained I didn't use the restrooms or showers but I heard from my companions they were nice. However, only one shower was open. Not sure why.
Fairly level sites, extremely well-maintained, asphalt, clean, pleasant, water and electric hook-ups with nearby dump station. There was no water to back wash when I dumped my black water tank. I found that annoying but got over it quickly because I had such an enjoyable time and delighted in how wonderful this campground is. Castle Rocks State Park and City of Rocks National Reserve are beautiful places to visit and hike. This is a perfect area for mountain biking and rock climbing.
My price reflected a discount.
I didn't have any T-Mobile service to speak of but every now and then I'd get a bar or two for about 5 minutes and then POOF! It was gone.
I only live a few hours away so I imagine I will be back here more than once.

We heard about this area from a lot of people and planned a trip to City of Rocks in mid-April. We had booked a new local private RV park, since the state parks were not open for reservations (first come-first serve). We took a chance there would be open spots and found the campground about half full, so a number of great spots to choose from. Sites have electric and water, however we found the water was not on for the season yet as it was still getting cold over night. We were able to shuttle some water in a 6 gal jug from the park ranger station about 5 min away in Almo. We loved this area and did some hiking and exploring in both Castle Rocks State Park and the City of Rocks National Reserve. Amazing area with a lot of history, and worth allowing time to explore. We have another trip planned for the fall.
Asphalt level site with fire pit. Easy to back in.

What an awesome place! A lot of times, great, established campgrounds this beautiful are reserved for tent campers and RVs can go there as dry campers only. Not here! They have one full campground reserved for RVs with full hookups. But it’s not an RV park, it’s a campground. Say goodbye to gravel parking lots and hello to beautifully secluded sites surrounded by desert trees and mountains in the distance. Plus you get the location benefits of the parks and hiking and masterfull viewing.
Cost for a night was $30 for out of state plates, and then we had to pay $14 in vehicle fees. Because we have a class A, we had to pay vehicle fee for that and then also for our “toad.” Kind of a bummer because trailers don’t pay vehicle fees and our RV did the same thing they do: sit at the site. Site was level and plenty long enough for our big, full-timer rig.

Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and rocks. Close to City of Rocks. Trees between the sites make it feel private. We went in early May so it was cool the first few days then got very hot. Be sure to follow the written directions as the signs can be deceiving. The General Store in town is a fun stop.
