It’s half way between Anchorage and Girdwood. We stayed for free with our disabled veterans pass from the state of Alaska. They have clean vault toilets and a 7 night limit, but nobody really checks on you, other than a park ranger who cleans out the fee box. It’s close to the highway but the trees muffle the cars well. The train is loud but not obnoxious. Our 30 foot class A fit well in the spot! Not too much bigger of an RV would fit though. There’s a trail that runs along the turbo again arm here all the way to Girdwood, 13 miles one way, if you’re athletic it’s a beautiful ride there to a cute ski town. Look in the inlet for Baluch whales and the bore tide off the trail. We loved the convenience to town. 30 minutes from Anchorage, it was a great stop.

Some of the sites are large enough to fit big rigs (we are 38 feet long) and semi-private with all the trees that also help muffle the noise. Bird Creek Campground offers 28 sites, tent camping and max stay 7 days at a time.
Across the highway from Bird Creek campground are 30 additional sites in the overflow parking lot for $20.00 a night up to 7 nights. We stayed here a couple of nights while passing through the area.
Our biggest complaint was the highway noise, although it didn’t keep us from staying at Bird Creek campground more than once when passing through the area. The campground sits between the railroad tracks and the highway. The train often comes multiple times a day but not through the nighttime. This is a popular campground with fishermen and families alike.
Bird Creek offers a nice walking trail that takes you right down to the river where you can fish for salmon, when in season. The water is a beautiful greenish-blue and very cold. The trail offers views of the Turnagain Arm along the railway. There were wildfires in the area so we had a limited view of the mountains during our visit.
We would definitely stay at Bird Creek Campground again when we visit the Anchorage, Alaska area. It is close to the city, approximately 25 miles to grocery stores and other big box stores, for shopping.

The campground was clean and nice. No trash cans, had a water hand pump but didn’t try it so can’t attest to quality. We are in a 36’ Class A pulling a jeep. Had to unhook to be able to back in but did fit. Not all sites would’ve worked but still quite a few. Nice walking path along the water but no real access to the water and not a lot of views of it. Has pit toilets but didn’t go in so can’t address cleanliness. Went to the Indian Valley exotic meat store (3 miles East/north. Had burgers from Brown Bear. Decent burger/fries for $10.

Ok site, the entire campground is ideal for solar. Very clean for mid May. Road and train noise. Seemed to be a local favorite, the campground was full by Thursday mid morning

We pulled in on a Saturday afternoon and there were plenty of sites to choose from, all backin sites, FCFS. It is close to the highway and the Alaska Train, neither too terrible noise wise. Most sites can fit a big rig, mostly level, tables, fire pits, pit toilets, not a lot of shade, trash dumpster at the entrance. Two public use cabins for rent are located here. There is a pay by credit card machine that was not working, but the iron ranger also takes your fee.
The Bird to Gird trial runs by the campground for easy access for a fun ride to Girdwood. There is also hiking nearby.

Nice little park, easy striking distance to Anchorage. A bit of road noise but very clean. I really regret not having my bike, the trail looks awesome. It would be an easy ride to Girdwood Brewery!
First come first served. Clean gravel level sites. On nice paved trail with interpretive signs. No water views. There is road noise if that bothers you.
There seems to be a resident bear snooping in the fire pits. I hope they move him before he gets into trouble.

Sites are very level and quite well-maintained. It is a busy campground though due to its proximity to Anchorage, so best to arrive early (people were driving through at all hours looking for sites once it was filled). There is black bear activity here (one surprised us when we went to pay at the fee station!). Unfortunately we didn't have a lot of time to spend at this campground, but sure wish we did! The trail between the campground and Turnagain Arm is paved and would have been lovely to bike along to Girdwood. We did get to see the bore tide!

We stayed here twice during our stay in Alaska. Close to anchorage with walking paths to bird creek and views of Turnagain arm. First come first serve but we got spots by arriving early ( by 1pm)
