“The first place to see Sunlight in the US”
Cadillac Mountain is commonly believed to be the first location in the United States to be struck by the sun's rays each morning. Driving or hiking to the summit of Cadillac Mountain to see "the nation's first sunrise" is a popular activity among visitors of Acadia National Park. There are various hiking trails to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, some more challenging than others. There is also a paved road to the top.On a clear day, it is possible to see Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest mountain, to the north and the Canadian province of Nova Scotia to the east, both over one hundred miles away.
First of all, the views at all of Acadia National Park are breathtaking. We were unable to get to the summit of Cadillac Mountain because in all of the research we did, no where did we see that we would need reservations to drive or park our vehicle. We weren’t allowed in and since we were only spending a day at Acadia, we were unable to see it. GET YOUR RESERVATIONS!
we woke up at 4:30 AM to watch the sunrise and it was the most beautiful thing i've ever seen. fog was rolling in and it was incredible with the light. after that you'll be hungry, but everywhere to eat will be closed til 8 AM so plan for that.
go at night and stare at the stars....wow...windy there all the time...
Many people drive up to the summit to watch the sunrise and the two most popular hiking trails to the summit are the North Ridge Trail and the South Ridge trail. My favorite hike to the summit is by way of the breathtaking gorge Trail, which runs right between Dorr Mountain and Cadillac mountain, where you have towering walls of granite rising high above you. From there I take the Canon Brook trail up the mountain.
Cadillac Mountain was first named Green Mountain and for a number of years the Green Mountain Railroad Company operated a cog train from the shore of Eagle lake to the summit. The train was said to have been very slow and in time the company went out of business, but the railroad spikes they left implanted in the granite along the mountain side took on a new life as the train route soon became a popular hiking trail though the trail is unmarked and not found on most maps.
The mountain side is also home to a really nice waterfall with a crystal clear pool of water at its base. The waterfall also does not appear on maps, but if you visit it right after a good rain it is something to see.
Beuatiful, you can drive to the top.
My husband and I went on our honeymoon to Bar Harbor and visited Cadillac Mt at sunrise. A little crowded but we found a path off the side and saw equally amazing views of the sunrise. After the sun came up we took a hike. Very peaceful in mid September. Colors are just starting to change too.
One of my favorite trips ever. Ocean view top of the mountain. Great trip, great time
Fabulous views! Worth the hassle of getting a reservation!
If your goal is to see the sunrise there make sure you make reservations!! It was sold out on the only day we were in Acadia
Gorgeous views
