My 11 night working holiday in Tasmania 2021
3-4 Castray Esplanade, Hobart, Tasmania
Start walk at Princes Park, Battery Point. Histori area. Cannons were originally situated in Princes Park but was found to be a danger to nearby housing.
Check that the road is open before we go up there. Get close to the weather at kunanyi / Mount Wellington’s airy Pinnacle. The distinctive dolerite columns known as the Organ Pipes create a distinctive shape to the face of the mountain making it impossible to visit Hobart and not be awestruck by kunanyi/Mount Wellington. 1271m above sea level.
The Cascades Female Factory was a self-contained, purpose-built institution intended to reform female convicts. Thousands of women and children were incarerated here.
Tasmania is home to one of the best examples of these impressive geological wonders! Looking at this rock formulation it's hard to believe that it was created by nature and the elements and not man made.
1h drive from Hobart is Eaglehawk Neck, another thin isthmus of land that seems to attract nice sandbars along its extensive curve.
Tasmans Arch is a tall natural bridge in the sea cliffs and Devils Kitchen is a deep trench without an arch that has also been carved out by the Tasman Sea. Both attractions can be observed from overlooks at a pair of car parks
The bronze sculpture of a dog denotes the Dog Line,
where a row of savage snarling beasts deterred escapes during the convict era in colonial times, ferocious dogs guarded the isthmus. They were intended to ensure no convicts escaped the Port Arthur penal settlement.
