There's nothing quite like a scenic drive along the coast. Being able to roll the windows down, turn the music up, admire the views and feel the wind in your hair is one of the best feelings in the world. Of course, there's no better place for a coastal cruise than Hawaii! The Road to Hana, a portion of the Hana Highway, is one of the most incredible drives in the whole country... for the many bridges and curves as well as the unbeatable views!
The Road to Hana is 64-mile stretch of highway connecting Kahului with Hana. Even though the two towns are only about 50 miles apart as the crow flies, the drive will take, on average, two and a half hours, thanks to the 620 curves and 59 bridges along the route. It can feel a bit white-knuckle-y at times, especially along one of the 46 one-lane-wide bridges, but the scenery along the way is completely awe-inspiring.
Or, for a shore with a different hue, Kaihalulu is a red sand beach. The isolated stretch of beach gets its red color from a cinder cone nearby. It's pretty remote and the water is a little rough for swimming, but it's a rare sight to see!
Hana is also home to the Keanae Arboretum and Botanical Garden. The warm climate of Hawaii allows for some enchanting plant life to grow here, including rainbow-hued eucalyptus trees. The terraces, where species of taro grow, were built hundreds of years ago! Also be on the lookout for flowers like hibiscus and fruits like papaya.
