We tailored our first big family road trip to our wonderful son, Ewan, who loves volcanoes, science, and nature. What we came up with is a Pacific Northwest and Yellowstone volcanic adventure that was the trip of a lifetime for the whole family.
Perfect family rest stop. Waves, sea creatures, lagoon, rock formations, and sun.
My son Ewan has been drawing volcanoes for years, including making his own "Volcano Edition" Monopoly game. This was a dream come true moment when he saw the crater for the first time.
Excellent ranger talks in full view of the north-facing crater. It was like being part of history.

Sapphire blue waters inside an ancient volcanic caldera! Oh, with a little volcano in the middle.
Jerome, Idaho, United States
Well worth the stop. Guided walks describe the history of the ice cave and surrounding area.
Craters Of The Moon National Monument And Preserve, Idaho, United States
We almost didn't include this park in our trip, but WOW. All sorts of lava formations. Inferno Cone and Devil's Orchard looked like the surface of the moon.
Hidden Falls via shuttle boat shortened the hike for our little hikers. Then played lakeside and enjoyed a ranger talk.
Yellowstone did not let us down. The boys were amazed by everything they saw. Old Faithful was definitely exciting, but the trail around Upper Geyser Basin to the Morning Glory Pool really made our eyes pop. The boys earned their Young Scientist and Junior Ranger patches and loved using the IR thermometer.
