Clarks Trading Post

Start your trip at a roadside classic: Clarks Trading Post. At the very least, you can't miss out on their iconic bear shows, where adorable trained cubs put on performances. They also have train rides, acrobat performances, a mystery spot, bumper boats, climbing walls, and tons more. Browse the gift shop, stock up on snacks, and enjoy the fun!

Flume Gorge

1

If you can only do one thing on the road, definitely check out Flume Gorge. Over thousands of years, Flume Brook wore the winding gorge into the solid granite that now forms the walls. Inside, it's secluded-- just you, the bubbling creek, and the verdant green plants. Wooden stairs, boardwalks and overlooks have been put in to make the trek through the gorge even easier and more pleasant. There's even a covered bridge in the gorge-- it's a great place to steal a kiss from your sweetie! Hikers today can either do the entire two-mile loop or just visit the 800-foot gorge-- the whole loop is pretty stunning, and Franconia Notch State Park has an aerial tramway as well.

Sugar Hill Inn

2

The Sugar Hill Inn was Bette Davis' favorite place to stay before she purchased her own property in Sugar Hill, and it still has all the charm and beauty it offered when she stayed there. Rustic country inn atmosphere combines with modern amenities to create the ultimate getaway. The spa and restaurant onsite are renowned, and you'll want to take advantage of the view from the porch, or their cozy fireplace.

Pro tip: this place is strictly for adults. Perfect if you're looking for a hideaway in the mountains, but there are loads of family-friendly spots to stay in the area as well.

The Cold Mountain Cafe is a small-town cafe with a more sophisticated lunch menu-- delicious salads and sandwiches with high-quality ingredients. The staff is friendly, and it's a great place to check local artists and musicians.

Mt Washington Cog Railway

Mt. Washington in the White Mountains is the highest peak in the Northeast. A hike to the summit is brutal, but you can also take a 3-hour cog railway ride to the top. The ride is scenic and relaxing, and the views from the top are utterly breathtaking. There's a museum dedicated to the railway at the bottom (it's now powered by biodiesel fuel, but that wasn't always the case!) and you can shop and eat at the top.

If you're willing to spend a little more time here, driving the Mount Washington Auto Road in your car is an incredibly exhilarating experience that offers ever-changing views, each more stunning than the last.

After exploring Mount Washington, treat yourself to a hot meal at Cabin Fever Restaurant. They specialize in seafood, burgers, pizza, and a cozy cabin-like atmosphere. And, whatever you do, order a slice of homemade pie... it's to die for.
