Surrounded by some of the most fertile farm land in Missouri, Towosaghy State Historic Site is a former fortified village and civic-ceremonial center for the Mississippian peoples who lived in southern Missouri between A.D. 1000 and A.D. 1400. Visitors to the site can see mounds that speak to the site’s past activities and exhibit panels that tell the story of Towosahgy through archaeological excavations.

Walk down to the shore where the Ohio and Mississippi River meet. Think about how many amazing things have happened here from the Mississippi Indian community, to explorers Lewis and Clark, Civil War staging by US Grant and now the commerce and barges on these two mighty rivers.

I love the Mississippi and have spent a lot of time on the Ohio too, so this was a long-awaited treat for me. Not really sure about all the complaints in the review. It seemed fine to me. It's difficult to maintain a park that floods regularly (which is why there aren't more regular facilities available) especially in a state that is broke! Port-a-potty was fine when I was there. The historical information is up in the first parking lot. There is enough room for even a large camper to turn around once you drive down to the rivers.

You have to scramble a bit down an uneven surface to get down where the water is when I visited, but even up on the top is a better view than the short tower, which is blocked on the sides by trees. I tried to take a pano with my iphone and it actually ended before I got turned all the way past the Mississippi. :) There were several tugboats and barges anchored nearby, plus you can see all the bridges from there.

New Madrid Historical Museum

4

Located on the Mississippi River in the former Kendall Saloon at the foot of Main Street, the New Madrid Historical Museum reflects the history of this river town from the Mississippian period up through the early 20th century. The great earthquakes of 1811 and 1812 are well documented in the Museum's collections as is the potential for future seismic activity.

Other exhibits include the story of the Battle of Island #10 during the Civil War, and the story of the Mississippians, who occupied the New Madrid area for several centuries at what is now known as the Lilbourn Fortified Village Site.

The New Madrid Historical Museum is open 7 days a week, 358 days a year! Our hours vary slightly- It is 9am-5pm Mon-Sat and 12pm-5pm on Sunday from April thru November. December thru March it's 10am-4pm Mon-Sat and 12p-4p Sunday.

We are closed Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving week, Christmas Eve & Day, New Years' Eve & Day and Easter Sunday.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students under 18. 6 and under are free

This museum has all the information for the 1811-1812 earthquakes. Also, how to plan for an earthquake before, during, and after one would strike. I originally thought you would plan for only three days of supplies and I learned there that it’s actually two weeks worth of supplies. Great for teachers!
