The monument preserves and protects the third longest cave in the world. Not only do the passageways offer a maze of exploration opportunities, the cave formations are often considered one-of-a-kind for visitors.
The Custer County Courthouse building, of Italianate-design, was built in 1880, constructed with bricks from a local kiln. It opened January 1881 in Custer City, Custer County, Dakota Territory, eight years before South Dakota became a state. This building was the hub of Custer County development from 1881 to 1974, serving not only as a center for government, but also in early years as a meeting place for church services, socials and community activities. Justice was dispensed from this building for 92 years until it was given to the Custer County Historical Society in 1973.
Sylvan Lake, known as the "crown jewel" of Custer State Park, is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Created in 1881 when Theodore Reder built a dam across Sunday Gulch, it offers picnic areas, rock climbing, small rental boats, swimming, and hiking trails. It is also popular as a starting point for excursions to Harney Peak and The Needles.
The night blast is June 26th - celebrates the birthday of the late Mrs. Korczak (Ruth) Ziolkowski (1926 - 2014), wife of the late Crazy Horse sculptor. It also commemorates the anniversary of the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. The battle was June 25, 1876. Crazy Horse was a main strategist in the defeat of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and his troops.
The public is welcome to the night blasts. After 7:00 p.m. on June 26th the Memorial gratefully accepts three cans of food per person in lieu of the regular admission fee. Regular admission is charged for those without food. Because the night blasts are among the Memorial’s most popular events, the public is advised to arrive early. The restaurant at Crazy Horse closes at 4pm on the evenings of the night blasts, but the Snack Shop remains open.

“Legends in Light” presented at 10:00 PM

“This is laser-light storytelling to illuminate our cultural diversity, celebrate our similarities and encourage better understanding and harmony among races and nations,” said Ruth Ziolkowski,(1926-2014) wife of late sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski (1908-1982).
The Memorial honors Native Americans, and “Legends in Light” dramatizes the story of the rich heritage, living cultures and contributions by Native Americans to our society. The show features colorful animations, sound effects and laser beams choreographed to music.
