This is a 3 week cross country road trip from Minnesota to Yellowstone and the Tetons, Greak Salt Lake, across the NV desert, reaching California, heading up the coast before heading back home via OR, ID, MT and ND.
Numbered markers are places we are stopping for a day or a few. Interest points are places we will explore along the way.
Salinas is the home of John Steinbeck with the National Steinbeck center. Soledad, setting for Of Mice and Men is just down the road. Cannery Row is 17 minutes away in Monterey. Nothing fancy here, but the hotel does have a laundry, appears to be rated well for cleanliness, and is the cheapest room in Salinas at the moment.
Hotel is booked for check in 23 (as a contingency - we will cancel and expect to arrive on the 24th, depart 26th). Will be our base in Monterey before heading up the coast for beach camping.
go on afternoon of 24th, because we are back at the hotel that night (unless we are not back in town in the afternoon)
one of many places for tide-pooling

From Highway 1, South Of Aptos, San Andreas Rd Heads Southwest And Continues For Several Miles To Manresa, The First Beach Access Upon Reaching The Coast, Rio del Mar, CA, US
Abe wants to visit! Note tickets are available on Groupon. Pick up closer to our trip departure :-)
ideally we tide pool or beach comb in the morning, drive up to the Winchester House, and make our way back to Santa Cruz for an afternoon/evening stop on the boardwalk and then head back to our campground :-)
Run by the UCSC Marine Biology program and $40 less than a visit to the Aquarium (which is also really cool but spendy).
Options if Manressa Beach Campground is overrated.
Must reserve in advance, but would look to be a great place 40 mins. south of SF to stay when visiting the city! Most likely will try to get one of the rare campgrounds in Kirby Cove if we can.
2 days to explore SF. Remember to get a FasTrak pass to be able to use carpool lanes and autopay at bridget tolls. The pass is free but must be mailed so have to get it before we leave on the trip. Can also purchase in state.
the most amazing vegan Mex you will find anywhere on the planet.
