“The island home of James Bond's deadliest foe!”
Khao Phing Kan or Ko Khao Phing Kan is a pair of islands on the west coast of Thailand, in the Phang Nga Bay, Strait of Malacca. About 130 ft from its shores lies a 66 ft tall islet Ko Tapu or Khao Tapu. The island is a part of the Ao Phang Nga National Park. Since 1974, when it was featured in the James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun as the lair of Scaramanga, it is popularly called James Bond Island. After the movie release it turned into a popular tourist destination that has gradually contaminated Khao Phing Kan with household litter. Since 1998, it is forbidden for tourist boats to approach Ko Tapu. This measure aims to stop erosion of the limestone rocks on and near the islet that might eventually result in its collapse.
We went in September, the rainy season. So there was off and on rain all throughout the day. We made it to the island with a light sprinkle and even swam out to the rock, climbed on it and jumped off. It was so much fun! Plus with the light rain, there was a foggy mist rolling around the rock that just made it look even more mysterious than usual. Not many people were out swimming because of the rain. Unfortuantely there are tons of woman vendors set up trying to sell the same ugly touristy shit, but that's anywhere I guess.
