Sandwiches are more than just a quick and easy meal- to some, they are a form of art. From a simple PB&J to gourmet creations piled high with a deli case of toppings, there’s something for everyone to love- and the beauty of the sandwich is that nothing is off-limits. Take a bite out of our list of the US’s craziest sandwiches!
1. The Luther Burger
As the story goes, singer Luther Vandross came up with the idea for this crazy concoction while on tour in 1979. While waiting backstage to perform at a concert in Indianapolis, he ordered burgers for himself and his crew, but there weren’t enough buns supplied by the catering company. Thinking quick, he improvised by taking a doughnut from the dressing room, split it in half (bagel style), and used it as the bun for the sandwich- and the Luther burger was born. 2. The Melo
The Carnegie Deli created this behemoth to welcome Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks. The sandwich, which is just about as tall as Anthony, contains mountains of corned beef and pastrami (it is New York, after all), piles of salami (because Anthony is going to ‘spice up’ the team), and a whole lot of bacon (since Anthony was gonna ‘bring home the bacon’), plus Russian dressing and lettuce, all on rye. What a slam dunk!
3. Fried Brain Sandwich
Maybe eating this fried delicacy will make you smarter! The Hilltop Inn still serves this old-school Midwest classic. You can choose between yummy pig brains or tasty cow brains for your sammie- both brains are thinly sliced, fried and served on a bun with pickles and onions.
4. Chow Mein Sandwich
Apparently putting beef chow mein on a hamburger bun is a huge deal in this town. Even though this ‘wich’s glory days are long passed, China Star in Fall River still serves this unusual local favorite. Apparently, it’s such a favorite that until very recently, it was still served for school lunches!
5. The Mother-in-Law
Fat Johnnie’s Famous Red Hots serves a Chicago-style corn tamale (and not an authentic one homemade with love- this tamale is a machine-made, mass-produced corn and meat torpedo) in a hot dog bun covered in chili and hot peppers- and they call this monster “The Mother-in-Law”. Yikes.
If you’re wondering what a boring, old BLT is doing on this list, hear me out: Tony’s I-75 Restaurant has the world’s largest BLT. I’m talking one whole pound of greasy, delicious, flavorful meat candy goodness. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you love your BLTs, then prepare to chow down!
