Terre Haute is a city in the west-central Indiana, about 4 hours (300km) south of Chicago and 1 hour southwest of Indianapolis. The name "Terre Haute" is French for "high land" and refers to the area's history from the French colonization of the Americas as well as its geography next to the Wabash River.

1. Terre Haute was the home of Socialist Party of America leader and five-time presidential nominee Eugene V. Debs. His former home is now a museum located on the campus of Indiana State University.
2. Terre Haute's name was derived from the French phrase terre haute, meaning "Highland." It was likely named by French explorers in the area in the early 18th century.
