- Author Thomas Bailey Aldrich wrote an autobiography, “The Story of a Bad Boy” about his misadventures in Portsmouth which launched the :bad boy" literary genre.
- While serving in the navy, Humphrey Bogart was transporting a prisoner to the Portsmouth Naval Prison, and the prisoner attacked him, smashing his lip. The repair surgery was botched and Bogart was never able to fully repair the injury.
- The USS Albacore was a prototype submarine built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and commissioned in 1953. At the time she was the fastest submarine ever designed.
- New Hampshire is the only state that ever played host at the formal conclusion of a foreign war. In 1905, Portsmouth was the scene of the treaty ending the Russo-Japanese War.
- Barney and Betty Hill,an American couple who were allegedly abducted by extraterrestrials in a rural portion of New Hampshire in 1961, were residents of Portsmouth.
