  1. Locally referred to as the “Big F Indian,” a 25-foot tall statue of an ritualized Native American adorning the letter F stands in the city of Freeport, towering over everyone for miles.
  2. Freeport is home to the L.L. Bean Company. The store is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, a promise that the company takes seriously, as the locks were removed from its doors in 1951.
  3. Joan Benoit Samuelson, 1984 Olympic marathon gold medalist, lives in Freeport.
  4. In 1982, McDonald's made plans to tear down an 1850s Greek Revival house to build one of its standard stores. Outcry from residents forced McDonald's built the restaurant inside the house, maintaining the exterior appearance. This was one of the first times that McDonald's had been forced to change its restaurant design to fit local requirements.
  5. First settled about 1700, it was set off and incorporated on February 14, 1789 as Freeport. It is probably named "from the openness of its harbor".
