  1. Eko is said to have been named by Charles Crocker, a superintendent of the Central Pacific Railroad. He was especially fond of animal names and added the letter "o" to Elk.
  2. In 1985, the world famous Cowboy Poetry Gathering started in Elko.
  3. Elko is also home to legal prostitutes and contains active brothels. Under Nevada law, any county with a population of less than 400,000 is allowed to license brothels if it so chooses.
  4. Elko and Elko County are major settings in Dean Koontz's novel Strangers.
  5. Americana band Railroad Earth have a song entitled "Elko," with lyrics depicting the prostitution, gambling, and drinking.
