- Eko is said to have been named by Charles Crocker, a superintendent of the Central Pacific Railroad. He was especially fond of animal names and added the letter "o" to Elk.
- In 1985, the world famous Cowboy Poetry Gathering started in Elko.
- Elko is also home to legal prostitutes and contains active brothels. Under Nevada law, any county with a population of less than 400,000 is allowed to license brothels if it so chooses.
- Elko and Elko County are major settings in Dean Koontz's novel Strangers.
- Americana band Railroad Earth have a song entitled "Elko," with lyrics depicting the prostitution, gambling, and drinking.
