“The birthplace of the rifled cannon”
The defining events of Fort Pulaski occurred during the American Civil War, but the people, places, and stories that shaped this monument of military ingenuity continue to live on today. For much of the 19th century, masonry fortifications were the United States’ main defense against overseas enemies. However, during the Civil War, new technology proved its superiority to these forts. The Union army used rifled cannon and compelled the Confederate garrison inside Fort Pulaski to surrender. The siege was a landmark experiment in the history of military science and invention
Best historic area I have been to when it come to being able to take your pets. This is a dog friendly fort, my dogs even got a "bark ranger" badge. The fort was very interesting, well restored and fun to explore.
Great stop! So informative and the ranger inside the fort knows his stuff!!
Really thought this would be a photo op but ended up spending over an hour here!!! So very cool. We all loved exploring this fort. Kids completed Jr Ranger program - Ranger Jillian was incredibly engaging and passionate. We spotted the bald eagle and juvenile in a nearby tree. Don’t miss this stop!
