Ratings Summary
I've known about Cave Falls since I was a kid in the 70's. It's near the end of a rather treacherous forest service road east of Ashton, ID. It is just outside the Yellowstone NP border.
There are 23 gravel sites, most of them are pull-through. The only amenities are vault toilets (that double as bear protection!) one yard hydrant for potable water, and several bear bins for food storage.
Sites are fairly level with some gravel, and include a picnic table and a fire ring. There is a turn-around at the end of the road, but large RVs may still need to make a 3- or 5-point turn.
All the sites are within an easy walk to the Falls River, a clear-running snowmelt river that is 34°F year-round. Self-registration and payment is available at the entrance.
Just a few miles up is the end of the road, and the spectacular sight of Cave Falls. It got it's name from the cave that is at the base of the falls. Sadly, it collapsed a few years ago and is no longer accessible. There is also a trail head for backpackers, day hikers and equestrian riders, plus vault toilets at the falls.
Most of the sites are surrounded by old-growth forest, so finding shade will not be an issue.
The Bechler River Ranger Station is just a few miles to the northwest.
