Crabtree Falls Campground

Spent one night here while traveling home and to check out the waterfall. Was height of the camping season and couldn't find anything for reservations online, so we decided to just stop in and try to get a site. That wound up being no issue as there was only one other RV and one tent site being used aside from the host. It's obvious that at one time the campground was a popular destination, these days it's mostly day hikers going to the falls though. The grounds are mainly kept up pretty good though and the weather was nice and cool for the middle of the summer.
The main attraction is Crabtree Falls. The hike to it is worth the climb back up to the trailhead and is recommended.

Second campground when heading northbound on the BRP. The RV loop has a mix of back-in sites and 'pull off' sites for larger rigs. Mostly level (unlike so many other BRP campgrounds). We were able to snag A9 (a reservable site that was open) which we think is one of the more private feeling sites in the campground with a huge yard.

No hook-ups, but dump station & water onsite - and flush toilets (no showers). We did get 'lucky' and have two neighbors who were generator dependent most of the day - one of the downsides of primitive sites.

We loved the hike here to the waterfall, although a bit strenuous (the longer route has a gentler elevation gain).

We had pretty excellent cellular service on the major carriers, and were able to easily get work done including uploaded larger YouTube videos over AT&T and Verizon while bonded.

Remote, elevated hardwood forest campground is nearly perfect. The BRP between grandfather mountain and Asheville is lightly traveled. The CG is between the two, roughly 6 miles north of Mt Mitchell SP. At 3800 feet above sea level the air is cool as long as there is any kind of breeze.

Only 6 of 22 rv sites were occupied or reserved when I rolled up at 4 PM on a Monday afternoon. The next day the headcount was 3. Other than one neighbor who ran a generator from 530 to 900 pm, I’ve never been in a public campground that was more quiet.

The hike to the falls is good exercise. The loop trail takes you down on either side of the creek. The falls are impressive, well worth the walk.

The description of the campground given by the other reviewers is accurate.

If this place had hot showers, I think it would be perfect.

If you are travelling in an RV, the A Loop is the only realistic option you have here. All things considered, if the campground is lightly booked and you're only staying a night or two, you should have a decent enough choice of sites. Site A-17 is a "pull off" which was reasonably level (though I needed some blocks under the inside wheels). Nothing spectacular about this camp, but a nice quiet setting with fresh water and a dump station. No hook ups here and there are dated (but clean) bath houses in each loop with flush toilets and no showers. Good cell signal here. I was able to text (even send pictures) and do some web surfing.
Without a doubt, the thing to do here is hike to Crabtree Falls. A wonderful, moderate to easy hike with a great reward at the Falls. Very nice.
A great deal to hang and relax here for a day or two and enjoy a superb hike to boot!
