46700 Lighthouse Rd, Buxton, NC 27920
OPEN MEM. DAY - LABOR DAY
$20 (1/2 with seniors pass)

This is one of 4 National Park Run campgrounds along the Outer Banks of NC. This one is First come First come first serve self check in. There are 202 primitive sites with a 14 day limit. All sites have a picnic table and a parking pad,,,water, toilets and shower houses are available, and trash bins, no shade and some stickers in the grass. Dunes separate the campground from the ocean it can be heard but its not accessible from the campground drive to public access nearby. A 4x4 Rd with Permit only is nearby but was closed when we were there. IT was hot but the wind made sleeping nice once the sun set. Great spot on cloudless nights for stargazing! Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is seen from the CG and at night the light is on! There is nothing between sites and they are spaced pretty tight we HAD no close neighbors, so it was wide open.

There is no overnight host so some college kids made a bit of noise but not bad. Daily the maintenance crews drove around.

Quiet place and a bit exotic. Close to a amazing beach. The sky is full of stars.

Dump and water available 1 mille before the camping, so you can use it even if you don’t stay there.

Beautiful area and there weren’t many people around when we visited in late April. Good access to the beach if you can drive a minute or two. There are beach trails for 4x4 vehicles if you get a permit. Only negative is the campground is low lying and sites will flood during times of heavy rain. Overall, our stay was great and we’d stay here again.

This was our second stop on our outterbanks trip. The campground is in the cape hatteras national seashore which also has the Hatteras lighthouse. Campground is very low and can be prone to flooding. We visited in early June and there were only 6 other campers. All sites are paved and the grounds well maintained with bathrooms and showers. We rode our bikes to the lighthouse and beach. There is also a WWll cemetery on site. The rangers at the park were super friendly and helpful.

Huge open area with large spots far apart in areas of well maintained lawn. The mowed loops are separated by wild grassy natural areas of low vegetation. It is out on the point of the Cape Hatteras natural Seashore. We couldn't hear the road but could hear the surf. Tables and grills are provided. Paved roads and pads. Very few people in September.
In one direction there is a park road to the Hatteras Light and much of the park as well as Buxton where there is a great store,Connors. In the other there are sand roads to the beach and several beach ramps. With a permit you can drive on these roads and much of the beach.
This all gets a bit interesting with wind from the East and high tides with rain. The elevation is about three inches and right now 80% of the pads are under water and most of the grass is. I don't mind because our rig is out of the water and the beach is nearby. The restrooms are clean and convent. High water can bring interesting visitors to the shower. Recently one had a black snake in it and the other had a bunch of frogs. Neither was a danger and the critters were removed when they cleaned the showers.
Although folks say that there is phone service that does internet. TMobil has no data hotspot and Verizon only offers 56k LOL...

As long as it's not flooded, this place is great for dry camping. (LOL, dry camping)
I've never seen it even close to full (of campers) but you do need to call ahead and check on the flooding conditions. And keep a close eye on the weather. If there's any significant rainfall coming, you had better have a backup plan.

Best campground on the East Coast for surfing, IMHO.
Easy, direct access to some of the best surf spots on the coast.
You can purchase an off-road pass online and drive your 4x4 on the beach or there are parking lots within easy walking distance to the beach. All within this state park.

There are several bathrooms scattered throughout the campground that are pretty clean.
The showers are in separate buildings but the water is not heated. So that might not be fun during the colder months. There are no showers near the beach access parking lots.

There is a dump station on the way in/out that is not monitored so I am pretty sure anyone could use it, for free, even if you are not camping here.

There are no hookups at the sites but there are water spigots throughout the park, but they are not threaded. So if you want to use them to fill your RV fresh water tank you will need an adapter, like a "water bandit". There are also water hoses at the dump station with signs that say it is "Clean Water ... for domestic tank only".

The sites are all paved and there is plenty of room between them. Some of the most spread out sites I've seen. There aren't any shade trees anywhere but the grass areas around the sites is well maintained. There's also a good amount of shrubbery separating sections of the park, which keeps it from looking like a giant parking lot. On my current stay I had an entire row to myself and could not see another camper from my site for the first 2 days.

Overall, it's a very quiet and relaxing place to camp with great access to beautiful beaches and a view of the Caper Hatteras Lighthouse.
