“one of america's most popular lake destinations!”
Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada of the United States. Lying at 6,225 ft, it straddles the state line between California and Nevada, west of Carson City. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, and at 122,160,280 acre⋅ft trails only the five Great Lakes as the largest by volume in the United States. Its depth is 1,645 ft, making it the second deepest in the United States after Crater Lake in Oregon (1,945 ft). The lake was formed about 2 million years ago as part of the Lake Tahoe Basin, with the modern extent being shaped during the ice ages. It is known for the clarity of its water and the panorama of surrounding mountains on all sides. The area surrounding the lake is also referred to as Lake Tahoe, or simply Tahoe. More than 75% of the lake's watershed is national forest land, comprising the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the United States Forest Service. Lake Tahoe is a major tourist attraction in both Nevada and California. It is home to winter sports, summer outdoor recreation, and scenery enjoyed throughout the year. Snow and ski resorts are a significant part of the area's economy and reputation. The Nevada side also offers large casinos, with highways providing year-round access to the entire area.
Reviews
In winter people travel here from around the world for world class ski and in the summer, it's the clear blue and emerald waters that people call paradise. There's also plenty to do off season in the fall, such as hiking! You'll need your sweater but it's a great way to get exercise, enjoy the beautiful terrain and not pay peak season prices.
I think this place is beautiful and awsome we can even skip rocks.
It is beautiful. We visited mid June so a lot of activities around the lake had not opened, ex. Sky tram or the boat cruises around the lake.
Nature lovers and photographers...prepare your equipment and visit Lake Tahoe.
Fairly people call it "the eyes paradise"...because it is truly a paradise!!! Personally, I took some fantastic pictures of the landscape while my kids did some rafting.
We truly enjoyed being there and we will re visit this lake..it is one of the most beautiful around..
This place is a must see. The views are breathtaking! There are also lots of activities to enjoy. The rafting was awesome. My favorite part was watching the sunset here at Lake Tahoe.
Lake Tahoe has so much beauty. Definitely a sight to behold when you first cross over the mountain and see the enormous lake stretched out below. Plenty of beautiful scenes to ski.
