“the highest point in Arkansas”
Rising high above the Arkansas River Valley, Mount Magazine State park preserves the spectacular scenery of the tallest mountain in Arkansas. Formed over thousands of years, Mount Magazine was a landmark for Native Americans long before the first Europeans set foot in Arkansas. French explorers and fur trappers who penetrated the region during the 1600s were quick to notice the mountain and, in fact, its name comes from the French word for barn. The name evidently refers to the unique barn-shaped outline presented by the mountain when viewed from a distance. The mountain was a hideout for both refugees and Arkansas men avoiding service during the Civil War. Its high bluffs provided both protection and outstanding viewpoints from which military movements could be watched. In the years after the war, Mount Magazine took on new life as a significant resort area. A lodge was built atop the mountain where visitors could enjoy cool breezes even during the hottest months of the summer. Plans were even made for the development of an entire town on the top of the mountain, but the envisioned city in the sky never became a reality. Today the mountain is an Arkansas state park and has moved into a new era in its history as a resort. The state has built a magnificent new lodge and restaurant on the bluffs overlooking Petit Jean Valley. Cabins and campgrounds are also available on the mountain. Mount Magazine also offers hiking trails, picnic areas, horseback trails and launching points for hang gliding. Several seasonal waterfalls flow down the sides of the mountain (usually during the winter and early spring) and the National Forest Service recreation area just below the park on Highway 309 offers swimming in a beautiful mountain lake. Often overlooked by many visitors to the park are its two significant waterfalls. Both flow best after good rains and are especially scenic in the winter and early spring. The Mt. Magazine Cascade, which is more than 100 feet from top to bottom, can be reached by following the trail from the Brown Springs Picnic Area for 1/2 mile until you reach a stream. The cascade falls off to your right. Mt. Magazine Falls is a 28 foot cascade and waterfall that can be reached from the last parking area on Cameron Bluff Overlook Drive. Just follow the trail down the mountain and under the high bluff until you reach a creek. The falls will be downstream, 100 yards to your left. Please exercise caution visiting the falls as they are slippery and can be dangerous.

If I can name several of the most amazing views in Arkansas it would go Mount magazine, whitney mountain, white rock, pinnacle mountain, mount nebo. So if you are into views where you can see forever go here! We Love renting there luxury cabins with hot tubes on the porches. There are so many hikes to go to with varying levels. If you love butterflies you should plan to come to the butterfly festival it is one of the biggest in the nation and is a big deal!
We had our family reunion here last year and had an amazing time. The staffs are very nice and approachable. The rooms are clean and the view from the terrace is fantastic! The food is also great.
Beautiful in the spring. We will return !

It was easy to find our way to the park and we enjoyed the drive up from Havana. We stopped on the road side for a picnic lunch before arriving and didn’t see a lot of traffic.
We had site 10- so we were near the bathhouse-although we don’t use it often. It was neat and clean and a lot of other campers used it.
We had a pretty level site and had plenty of space around our camper. The campground was pretty busy during our 3 night stay. We saw a lot of other campers coming in and out. However it was still pretty quiet there.
We rode our e-bikes all over the campground multiple times and went on multiple hikes. This park is absolutely beautiful.
We ate lunch (specials) at the lodge one afternoon- had delicious pot pie. There were a good number of people staying at the lodge.
We drove down the other side of the mountain (toward Paris) one day and found a small convenience store that sold beer. There is a Dollar General in Havana.
My husband has an Android and had NO signal at the campground. I have an iPhone and had intermittent weak signal. Taking a ride to the amphitheater we found 2 bars so we could communicate with family.
I asked at the lodge about coin operated laundry and was told there isn’t any for campers.

The view from here is worth the middle of nowhere drive to this park, especially given the fact its in Arkansas and one would not expect much from Arkansas. But one would be wrong. Arkansas is awesome.
Sites were not ritzy or level. Bathrooms were clean but meh. The lodge was grand and completely surprising- stake out a rocking chair on the massive stone veranda and watch the sun go down from the top of the mountain.
Mountain biking, hiking, hang gliding, bird watching, geocaching... something for everyone. There is no nearby town to speak of so stock up before coming.

The temperature really is 10-15 degrees cooler on the mountain. We had deer coming up right outside the camper to eat mushrooms and hickory nuts. Nice level sites with full hookups. There are 18 sites they all have a full hookup, tent area, lantern hook, fire ring, picnic table and grill. The lodge was gorgeous and dog friendly on the patio. The restaurant served good food, not fancy but well prepared. You did have to fill out a form for private membership to get a cocktail, but it was easy and didn't cost. Bring all your booze as Paris only sells local wine and has limited beer selection. No liquor stores in Paris. There was a Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Sonic, and Taco Bell. Havana didn't have any stores other than a small gas station. Lots of hiking trails and the Cameron Bluff overlook was beautiful. All the park and lodge employees seemed very nice and friendly. AT&T cell phone coverage was almost non-existent until you drove up to the lodge.

Really nice, no pull throughs, but still easy access to back in, with long deep sites for RV’s. Very clean with several hiking trails in the park, and a very nice lodge on the south rim of the mountain. We visited in October and the park was full.

We spent 4 nights here during Spring Break in 2018. Sites are spacious and well laid out. The pads are level asphalt with gravel around the picnic table and fire pit. The restrooms were clean and well kept and there were a couple of trails that left from the campground. The overlooks on the Mossback Ridge and Benefield Loop trails were beautiful. No, it's not the Rockies but Mount Magazine is the highest point in Arkansas and worth the trip. Some switchbacks on the road up the mountain but take your time and even the big rigs shouldn't have any problems.

Stayed here two nights and had a great time. The mountain has some switchbacks but nothing too tricky. The sites are mostly level and paved. The lodge is beautiful, I would recommend checking it out. The trails leading to the highest point in Arkansas were clear and well maintained, but some of the other trails were a bit overgrown. If you’re traveling with dogs make sure you bring tick repellent!

Loved this state park, we had a very private site with beautiful forest, wildflowers and fireflies to look at. Site 15. Lodge was gorgeous and the views from driving around were great. Did lots of hikes. Tons of ticks in the summer though so be careful.
