Natural Wonder

Our Take

If you can, it’s really cool to experience the park from a boat, particularly at night. Islands stick up out of the bay, glaciers twist their way down to the water, and mountain ranges tower above it all in the background. The stargazing is, of course, top-notch and if you time your trip right, you might even spot the Northern Lights.

“where the ice age still lingers”

At the edge of the Kenai Peninsula lies a land where the ice age lingers. Nearly 40 glaciers flow from the Harding Icefield, Kenai Fjords' crowning feature. Wildlife thrives in icy waters and lush forests around this vast expanse of ice. Sugpiaq people relied on these resources to nurture a life entwined with the sea. Today, shrinking glaciers bear witness to the effects of our changing climate.

Amazing. The town of Seward is a funky coastal with real small-town appeal. We took a tour through Kenai Fjords Tours and they were awesome. The serve lunch - which was great - and the boat was warm and comfortable inside. Outside there was plenty of room for everyone to see. We saw seals, sea lions, otters, eagles, porpoises, whales...and of course the beautiful glacier spilling into the bay. What a fun day!

Kenai Fjords National Park is open all year, though exploring in winter requires a bit more planning. The park contains 40 glaciers, hiking trails, whale watching opportunities, mountaineering, ice climbing, dog mushing, snowmobiling, fat bikes, cross country skiing, and kayaking. You can explore the park on your own or take a guided tour.

Kenai Fjords is thriving with wildlife in all seasons. It is home to 191 species of bird, bears, beaver, coyote, mountain goat, river otter, snowshoe hare, little brown bat, lynx, hoary marmot, marten, mink, moose, meadow jumping mouse, northern bog lemming, porcupine, gray wolf, wolverine, Dall’s porpoise, harbor porpoise, Steller sea lion, harbor seal, orcas, fin whale, gray whale, humpback whale, minke whale, and sei whales.

We think a visit here is one of the best things to do in Alaska.
