“The magical waters of the Tongariro River provide one of nature's finest, fun-filled roller coaster rides. Navigate over 60 rapids with an expert guide at the helm. Safety and 'oarsome' fun are our priority. Plus, keep an eye out for the native whio.”
At Tongariro River Rafting based in Turangi (just south of Taupo), we are the most experienced outdoor adventure company on the Tongariro River. The owners, Garth and Leigh Oakden, are Turangi locals and have owned the business since 1990. We create journeys and share stories, bringing people closer to nature through biking, fishing and rafting. For us, it is all about the experience. We also like to have fun!
We also love nature. In fact, we’re so dedicated to preserving the natural environment of the Tongariro River, we founded the Blue Duck Project. The goal of the Blue Duck Project is to return the rare native Blue Duck or whio to its traditional habitat along the Tongariro River. If you’re lucky, you will spot these rare ducks on the river while you’re rafting. With our help, they are thriving.
With Tongariro River Rafting, you have the choice of activities – white water rafting, family float adventures, mountain biking, fishing and overnight rafting trips. We also partner with the best Taupo adventure operators to bring you a range of adrenalin pumping combos, which will not only excite and delight, but will also save you money! We can also pick you up from your Taupo, Turangi or National Park accommodation so just let us know when you book.
Our expert guides are fully trained and most have international experience. They are here to ensure your trip with us is both safe and enjoyable.
