“A short walk through a lush native forest to the beatuiful Matai Falls.”
Actually, two waterfalls, Horseshoe Falls and Matai Falls, are located on the Matai Stream in the Catlins Forest Park. Easy and enjoyable walk, picnic tables and a scenic highway make these falls very popular among the tourists and locals.
The Matai Rail Trail is a 1-2 hour walk accessible from the Matai Falls. The trail follows the old railway formation where is winds around the south-western slopes of Table Hill through the native forest. The trail was opened in 2015, one hundred years after the opening of the last section of the railway from Houipapa to Tahakopa.
