“Take a journey back in time, and enjoy train travel the way it used to be, with Oamaru Steam and Rail.”
This historic train travels from Harbourside Station, a Railway Station in Itchen Street that was built in a single day in 1996. After leaving the Station, you travel behind the Historic Precinct, past some of Oamaru's oldest buildings.
After the Historic Precinct you will travel through the old Oamaru railway yard, and past the site of Oamaru's first Railway Station. The train then runs along the bottom of clay cliffs, beside Oamaru's Victorian Harbour.
At the end of the line, the terminus is the Red Sheds.
The return trip is approx. half an hour with about 15 minutes to look around.
If 15 minutes isn't long enough, you can visit Portside restaurant for a coffee or meal with a magnificent view out over the Pacific Ocean. Over the road from Portside is the famous Blue Penguin Colony. After visiting these attractions, catch a later train back to Harbourside. Check the timetable page on their website for times.
