“Tall pinnacles separated by narrow ravines will have you imagining faces in the rock in no time.”
Is that a meeting of druids in the hills? Or gigantic organ pipes? Or maybe shark teeth. The imagination goes wild in these otherworldly formations, which are made up of layers of gravel and silt, originally formed by the flow from ancient glaciers over a million years ago.
The cliffs are on private land. There's a donation box at the gate, or you can pay the $5 vehicle admission fee at the Omarama i-SITE. To get to the Clay Cliffs, turn onto Quailburn Road off SH8 and then onto unsealed Henburn Road.
The Omarama hot tubs, back on the main highway, make for a great stop afterwards.
Reviews
The cliffs are located off of SH 8, 25km south of Twizel or 5km north of Omarama. Turn at the “Clay Cliffs” road sign and go 4km then left onto the signed gravel road for another 3.5km. At the Clay Cliffs gate pay the $5 and drive 3.3km, then through the next gate and 500m more until the road wash-out under the cliffs.
