“A short walk to a small waterfall that is big on beauty - an ideal, refreshing travel break in your journey.”
THE WALK
Take a short downhill five to 10 minute walk through beautiful native forest, cross the bridge across the Ahuroa River and arrive at the gorgeous Piroa Falls, part of the Waipu Gorge Scenic Reserve.
AND SWIM
Take your swimming gear as there are great shallow swimming holes along the way and at the end of the track, you are rewarded with a gorgeous small waterfall and deeper pool at the base of the falls. Jumping from the rocks into the pool is recommended but please be careful and ensure your safety first.
GETTING THERE
Travelling north on State Highway One, Waipu Gorge Road is on the left at the base of the north side of the Brynderwyns.
Travelling south, it is about 35 minutes south of Whangarei, turning right just before you begin to drive up the Brynderwyns.
Drive approximately seven kilometres up Waipu Gorge Road until you reach the parking area and track indicated by a DOC and AA sign.
