“Possibly Wellingtons Oldest House”

Beautifully presented and rich with history, Nairn Street Cottage was built in 1858 by William Wallis and is believed to be the oldest house in Wellington. Go back in time and discover stories of the original Wallis family and their descendants, who lived in and owned the cottage for three generations.

Admission includes a tour of the cottage, where your experienced guide will take you through each room. You’ll be instantly transported to a time when the early colonial people of New Zealand were establishing a new way of life in a new country. Offering insights into their daily lives, from making candles from meat fat to washing clothes and cooking, the tour is a fascinating account of how life was lived in those early times. With its wooden floors, the objects within each room reflect the colonial past.
