“A fascinating walk along a segment of Wellington's coastline offering diverse local history and spectacular scenery.”
The Eastern Walkway is a 2.5km track on the southern end of the Miramar Peninsula. It can be walked from either end, or completed as a loop back along the Breaker Bay road. There is also an extra track out to Point Dorset above Breaker Bay, where you will find WWII gun batteries and observation points, as well as stunning views over the bay and harbour entrance.
At the Tarakena Bay end of the track is the Ataturk Memorial which commerates the first president of modern Turkey, and defender of Gallipoli. This particular spot was chosen for this memorial, dedicated in 1990, due to the landscape's resemblance of Anzac Cove in Gallipoli.
