“Wellington's little Italy”
We opened our little magic Osteria in Newtown in August 2014 to give people of Wellington a sample of humble, affordable and deeply authentic Italian food. By being an “Osteria” we mean that you are not coming to our restaurant, you are coming to our home. We will light candles and fire, pour wine and play music, and as Baudelaire would have said: “We will boil and serve our own heart”. Giulio Ricatti. Born in Rome Giulio grew up in Sardinia. While dreaming to be a writer, he spent bohemian years traveling around Europe and Mexico and doing the worst kitchen job he could get. Arriving in New Zealand he realised people would have think he was a great chef just because he was Italian and so he got his first employment at Caffe Italiano and later at Mariluca Ristoro. He got his big career satisfaction in leading the kitchen at Ombra where he was also known as “El Capitan”. Emilio Zunino. Born and grown up in Las Pampas, Emilio still remember the first time he had to kill a rabbit. That experience taught him that there are moments when you don’t have to think, but just kill! Philosopher of the life and the whole animal cooking, at the age of twenty he left his beloved campo with the guitar on his shoulder to go to Buenos Aires and work as sushi chef. Arriving in New Zealand he worked at Osteria del Toro, Hippopotamus and Ombra. His favourite quote is: “There must be everything in the world to call it world.”
